dəˌskriməˈnāSH(ə)n/
noun
- 1.is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex."victims of racial discrimination"
- 2.recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another."discrimination between right and wrong"
Discriminatory words include any words, labels, or gestures that indicate a bias against other people based on factors such as race, gender, status, age, nationality, or disability. These are words that separate or divide us, humans. Words that must not be included in the vocabulary. Words that should not be passed on from generation to generation. Words that should be totally eradicated and forgotten.
The words Sir and Madam are examples of discriminatory words. They project status of division - one in power and one as a subordinate. The word "respect" is occasionally attached to both words, but unconsciously, the words actually create a major division; a division between the rich and the poor, the powerful and the insignificant, the master and the slave.
